SCENARIO PLANNING
Our Process
At Curtis Strategy, we empower nonprofit leadership and boards to move beyond crisis mode to a proactive, strategic stance. Our structured engagement helps you confidently navigate uncertain fiscal landscapes. We facilitate a collaborative process to identify plausible future funding environments, stress-test your financial and operational models, and deliver custom analysis, board-ready scenario plans, and actionable tools.
Our goal is to equip your team with the insights and strategies necessary to make informed decisions and ensure your mission's sustainability in any economic climate. This helps you transform uncertainty into a strategic advantage and secure your organization's future.
Our initial "Discovery & Risk Framing" phase helps us gain a deep understanding of your organization's reliance on state and federal funding. We analyze existing contract structures and pinpoint your specific vulnerabilities. We'll conduct facilitated intake interviews or surveys with your executive team to discuss perceived risks, historical funding volatility, and strategic priorities. We also meticulously review your current and historical funding sources, including mapping funding by program or service lines.
Our key deliverables from this phase include a comprehensive Funding Dependency Snapshot and a Risk Sensitivity Matrix. This crucial pre-work is integrated with an environmental scan of relevant legislation, policy trends, and state budgets that could impact your funding. We conclude by working with your leadership to identify specific federal and state budget and legislative risks pertinent to your client services.
During our intensive retreat, we will collaboratively design future funding scenarios and map strategic responses. The first half focuses on Scenario Design, involving an environmental scan of legislative and policy trends. We'll then co-design 2-3 tailored funding scenarios, pre-populated with your financials, culminating in a comprehensive Scenario Planning Brief detailing the logic, assumptions, and narratives for each plausible future scenario, including methods to achieve specified reductions or strategic shifts.
The second half focuses on Strategic Options Mapping, where we'll identify response strategies across cost, service, and revenue. This includes conducting cost containment analysis, facilitating programmatic prioritization using a mission-versus-margin matrix, identifying new opportunities, and developing rapid-response strategies. Key deliverables here include an Options & Trade-Offs Outline, Community Impact Summary, and a Decision Matrix Tool.
Following the retreat, a Post-Retreat Leadership Debrief will refine all materials, resulting in a comprehensive Board Slide Deck and Briefing Materials to equip your leadership for effective implementation.
